Flesch-Kincaid Formula (1975 cited in Greenfield, 1999), is a recalibration of the original Flesch Formula. It rates text on a U.S. grade school level. For example, a score of eight means that an eight grader can understand the document. For most documents, the writers aim for a score of approximately 7.0 to 8.0.

The Flesch–Kincaid readability tests are readability tests designed to indicate how difficult a passage in English is to understand. There are two tests, the Flesch Reading Ease, and the Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level. Although they use the same core measures (word length and sentence length), they have different weighting factors.

The formula for the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Score is: (0.39× ASL) + (11.8 × ASW)–15.59

This calculator calculates the flesch kincaid grade level score using average sentence length, average of syllables per word values.

where,

ASL is the Average Sentence Length (the number of words divided by the number of sentences),
ASW is the Average of Syllables per Word (the number of syllables divided by the number of words),
