Molitor-Stevenson Equation Calculator

Use the simple Hydraulics calculator to calculate height of waves using Molitor-Stevenson equation. The height and velocity of waves are functions of fetch and wind velocity. Fetch is the clear-water distance form the dam to the opposite shore. Generally the straight-line distance is used. However, where slight bends in the measured line will lengthen the fetch, such bends may be incorporated according to judgment.

The Molitor-Stevenson equation for the height of waves (hw) is
(i). For a fetch greater than 20 miles, hw = 0.17(V*F)0.5
(ii). For a fetch less than 20 miles, hw = 0.17(V*F)0.5 + 2.5 - (F)0.5

Height of Waves Calculation

Formula:

Molitor-Stevenson Equation
i. fetch greater than 20 miles hw = 0.17

where,
  • V = wind velocity
  • F = fetch, statute miles
  • hw = height of wave from trough to crest
  • For wave heights between 1 and 7 ft, the velocity, v, in feet per second is given approximately by the formula v ≈ 7+ 2*hw.
